South West England Railroads

This child group collects English Railroads members headquartered or historically based in South West England, the largest of the nine regional child groups this atlas splits the parent group into by member count. It is anchored by the Great Western Railway itself, which linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales but whose dominant historical identity and route mileage belong to the West Country; the group also carries lines built into or absorbed by the Great Western across Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall (the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway, the Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway, the Avon and Gloucestershire Railway, the Bristol and Exeter Railway, the Bristol and North Somerset Railway, the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway, the Forest of Dean Central Railway, the Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway, the Bullo Pill Railway, the East Gloucestershire Railway, the Devon and Somerset Railway, the Culm Valley Light Railway, the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway, the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway, the Buckfastleigh, Totnes and South Devon Railway, the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, the Minehead Railway, the Wrington Vale Light Railway, the Cornwall Minerals Railway, the Newquay and Cornwall Junction Railway, the Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway, the Hayle Railway, the Inny Valley Railway, the Abbotsbury Railway, the Calne Railway Company, the Portishead Railway, the Creekmoor Light Railway, the Bristol Harbour Railway), plus the Midland and South Western Junction Railway and the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway, and the Ringwood, Christchurch and Bournemouth Railway connecting Hampshire to the modern South West England towns of Christchurch and Bournemouth. At 33 members it sits under this atlas's oversized-group threshold and needs no further split at this time.

The list of geographic regions presents the composition of geographical regions used by the Statistics Division in its publications and databases. Each country or area is shown in one region only. These geographic regions are based on continental regions; which are further subdivided into sub-regions and intermediary regions drawn as to obtain greater homogeneity in sizes of population, demographic circumstances and accuracy of demographic statistics.
