Dartmouth and Torbay Railway

The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway was an English railway company, incorporated by act of Parliament in 1857, that built a broad-gauge line linking the South Devon Railway branch at Torquay with Kingswear in Devon, opening in stages from Torre to Paignton in 1859 and reaching full completion in 1864; the South Devon Railway operated it from the outset. The company was absorbed into the South Devon Railway in 1872 and became part of the Great Western Railway in 1876, with its track converted from Brunel broad gauge to standard gauge in 1892. The section beyond Paignton became a heritage railway in 1972 and still operates as one today.
