Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway was a single track, narrow gauge railway company that opened in May 1898 and ran for slightly more than nineteen miles through the area bordering Exmoor in North Devon, England. It was authorised under its own Act of Parliament and built to higher standards than similar railways of its time, and was the only narrow gauge railway in Britain required to use main line standard signalling. It earned a modest return for shareholders for a short period but made a loss for most of its existence, was taken over by the Southern Railway in 1923, and closed in September 1935.
