English Railroads

This child group collects Railroads of the United Kingdom and Ireland members headquartered or based in England, by far the largest of the four nation groups this atlas splits the parent group into. It spans the great pre-grouping companies that became the Big Four and then British Rail (the Great Western Railway, the London and North Western Railway, the Midland Railway lineage, the Great Northern and Great Eastern Railways, the London and South Western Railway, the South Eastern Railway), London's deep-level tube pioneers (the City and South London Railway, the Central London Railway, the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway), dozens of English county and branch line companies from Cornwall to Northumberland, and the nationalised and privatised era operators headquartered in England (British Rail, British Railways Board, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, the London and North Eastern Railway, Southern Railway, Regional Railways, Virgin Rail Group, DB Cargo UK). At 128 members this remains the largest of the four nation groups by a wide margin and itself sits over this atlas's oversized-group threshold, expected to need its own further split by English region in a follow-on pass.
