The information technology industry encompasses companies that build, sell, and support the computer systems, telecommunications equipment, and software used to create, process, store, retrieve, and transmit information for businesses and consumers. Spending in this space grew rapidly through the early 2000s, with Americans spending more than 28 billion dollars on internet-related goods in 2002 and online commerce reaching roughly 289 billion dollars in sales by around 2012. Inside most modern organizations, information technology functions typically operate as a cost center supporting the rest of the business rather than generating revenue directly, covering hardware maintenance, network administration, and software support. Employment in computer systems design and related technology services has grown steadily over recent decades, reflecting the industry's expanding role across nearly every other sector of the economy.
