Acorn Computers Ltd. was a British computer company established in Cambridge, England, in 1978 by Hermann Hauser, Chris Curry and Andy Hopper. It produced a number of popular home computers in the 1980s, including the Acorn Electron, released in 1983, and the later Acorn Archimedes, while its BBC Micro dominated the educational computer market during that decade. The company also designed the ARM architecture and the RISC OS operating system. The architecture business was spun off in 1990 as Advanced RISC Machines, a joint venture with Apple and VLSI now known as Arm Holdings. Acorn was acquired and largely dismantled in early 1999.
