Digital Equipment Corporation, known as DEC and using the trademark Digital, was a major American computer company from the 1960s to the 1990s, founded by Ken Olsen and Harlan Anderson in 1957. It is best known for minicomputers, starting in the early 1960s, including the PDP line, with the PDP-8 and PDP-11 among the most successful minis in history, and for the late-1970s VAX supermini systems designed to replace the PDP-11. Its DEC Alpha line began to make inroads in the mid-1990s but came too late to save the company, which Compaq acquired in June 1998.
