Sun Microsystems, Inc., often called Sun, was an American technology company that existed from 1982 to 2010 and developed and sold computers, computer hardware, software and information technology services. It contributed to the evolution of Unix, RISC processors, thin client computing and virtualized computing. Its products included servers and workstations built on Motorola 680x0 processors and later on its own SPARC architecture, along with the SunOS and Solaris operating systems. Technologies it created include the Java programming language, the Java platform and the Network File System. Oracle announced in April 2009 that it would acquire Sun.
