Regional Railways

Regional Railways was one of the three passenger operating sectors of British Rail, alongside InterCity and Network SouthEast. It was created in 1982 to run local and regional passenger services across Great Britain and was the most heavily subsidised of the three sectors, with running costs about four times its revenue at formation. When British Rail was privatised, the sector was broken up into eight separate franchises, and Regional Railways itself ceased to exist on 31 March 1997.
