North West England Railroads

This child group collects English Railroads members headquartered or historically based in North West England, one of the largest of the nine regional child groups this atlas splits the parent group into. It spans the Grand Junction Railway and the Liverpool Overhead Railway serving Liverpool and Manchester, the Great Central Railway (originally the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway before its 1897 London Extension), the Chester and Holyhead and Chester and Crewe Railways serving Cheshire, the Cumbrian lines around Cockermouth, Keswick, Penrith and Workington in the Lake District, the "Little" North Western Railway, distinguished by name from the larger London and North Western Railway, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, the Furness Railway and its Ulverston-to-Carnforth predecessor, and the two Isle of Man lines, a British Crown Dependency folded into this region as the closest mainland grouping. At 22 members it sits under this atlas's oversized-group threshold and needs no further split at this time.
