Preston and Longridge Railway

The Preston and Longridge Railway was a Lancashire branch line authorized by an 1836 Act of Parliament, originally built to carry quarried stone from Tootle Heights Quarry in horse-drawn wagons as part of a larger, unrealized plan to link the Lancashire coast with Yorkshire. Passenger service began on 1 May 1840 and continued until 1930, while goods traffic on the six-and-a-half-mile line continued until November 1967; the company was leased to the Fleetwood, Preston and West Riding Junction Railway in 1848, purchased by a reformed company in 1856, and jointly vested in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and the London and North Western Railway in 1867.
