The industry of private security companies, business entities that provide armed or unarmed security services and expertise to clients in the private or public sector. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics formally defines these firms as organizations primarily engaged in guard and patrol services, including bodyguard, guard dog, parking security and security guard services, and many firms also offer more sophisticated special operations capability when clients require it. Core services include preventing unauthorized access, directing traffic flow, controlling entry to restricted areas, and detecting or preventing theft and fire, with roving patrols, personal protection and canine security units making up a smaller share of the overall market.
