The global industry engaged in forestry, the science and craft of creating, managing, planting, using, conserving and repairing forests and woodlands for the resources and benefits they provide to people and the environment. Forests worldwide support more than 86 million jobs directly and sustain many more livelihoods; in Germany alone, where woodland covers about a third of the country, the sector contributes roughly 181 billion euros a year to the economy and supports over a million jobs. Modern forestry follows a multiple use model that combines timber and fuelwood production with wildlife habitat creation, water quality management, recreation, landscape preservation, biodiversity conservation and carbon storage, and an estimated 880 million people worldwide, many of them women, are engaged in fuelwood collection or charcoal production for subsistence.
