The global industry made up of companies that use wood, specifically pulpwood, as raw material to produce pulp, paper, paperboard and other cellulose based products. Manufacturing runs pulp through a paper machine where it is shaped into a web, pressed to remove water using felt material, and then dried, typically with steam heated dryers on modern machines. The industry is concentrated in North America, Northern Europe and East Asia; as of 2011 China led global production with 99.3 million tons, or 24.9 percent of the world total, followed by the United States with 75.1 million tons and Japan with 26.6 million tons, with China having overtaken the United States as the top producer in 2009.
