United States Railroads

This child group collects Railroads members headquartered or chartered in the United States, the largest share of this atlas's own Railroads subcategory, spanning historic nineteenth and early twentieth century predecessor lines that merged into today's Class I systems (Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad), the surviving Class I freight carriers (BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, CSX), Amtrak's national passenger network, and a large number of Class II and Class III short line railroads still operating small regional and industrial routes across dozens of states. At 328 members this child group itself remains well over this atlas's oversized-group threshold and is expected to need its own further split by region or era in a follow-on pass.
