General Motors is an American multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, known for the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands. It originated in 1908 as a holding company for Buick, founded by William C. Durant, and for most of the twentieth century was the largest automaker in the world, a title it lost to Toyota in 2008. The company reorganized through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, emerging as the current General Motors Company.
