A real estate investment trust, or REIT, is a company that owns, and in most cases operates, income-producing real estate, including office and apartment buildings, warehouses, hospitals, shopping centers, hotels and commercial forests. REITs act as a bridge between financial markets and institutional investors on one side and housing and urban development on the other, and are generally divided into commercial REITs and residential REITs.
