AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is an American real estate investment trust headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, formed by the 1998 merger of Avalon Properties and Bay Apartment Communities, two apartment-focused REITs. It develops, owns and operates apartment communities concentrated in high-cost coastal metropolitan markets in the United States, including the New York, Washington D.C., Boston, Seattle and California regions, and is one of the largest publicly traded apartment REITs in the country.
