Stora Enso Oyj is a Finnish-Swedish pulp and paper company headquartered in Helsinki, one of the largest forest products companies in the world. It was formed in 1998 through the merger of Stora, a Swedish mining and forestry company whose roots at the Falun copper mine reach back to at least the thirteenth century, and Enso, a Finnish forestry and paper company founded in 1872, together giving the combined company one of the longest continuous corporate histories of any company in the world. Stora Enso produces pulp, paper, packaging materials and, increasingly, engineered wood products for construction, drawing on large forest holdings and plantations it manages across Scandinavia, the Baltic states and South America. The company has repositioned itself in recent years around renewable materials intended to substitute for plastic and other fossil-based products.
