In 2017 Amazon completed its acquisition of the grocery chain Whole Foods Market for about 13.7 billion dollars, at the time the largest acquisition in Amazon's history. The deal gave Amazon a nationwide network of physical grocery stores and was widely read as a signal that the company intended to compete directly in food retail alongside its online business.
