Petco Health and Wellness Company is an American retailer of pet food, supplies and services, with corporate offices in San Diego and San Antonio. It began in 1965 as a mail-order veterinary supply business in California and grew into a national chain of pet stores. Its ownership changed several times: it was bought by The Spectrum Group and the Thomas H. Lee Company in 1988, listed on the NASDAQ in 1994, taken private by Leonard Green and Partners and Texas Pacific Group in 2000, listed again in 2002, sold to CVC Capital Partners and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in 2016, and listed a third time in January 2021. Stores sell pet food, supplies and small animals such as fish, and some offer grooming, training, vaccinations and veterinary care. The company also owns the PetCoach app, PetInsuranceQuotes.com and the Vital Care veterinary subscription, and holds the naming rights to Petco Park in San Diego.
