The Palatinate Railway was the largest private railway company in Germany at the time of its formation, created by an 1869 merger of several private lines in the Bavarian Palatinate, including the Palatine Ludwig Railway, the Palatine Maximilian Railway, the Neustadt-Durkheim Railway Company and the Palatine Northern Railway Company. Based first in Speyer and later in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, it administered the region rail network from 1844 until 1908. On 1 January 1909 it was absorbed into the Bavarian State Railways and renamed the Royal Bavarian Railway Division of Ludwigshafen.
