Pabst Brewing Company is an American brewing company tracing to a brewery founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1844, later built into a major national brewer under Captain Frederick Pabst, who joined the business through marriage into the Best family that had founded it. Its flagship Pabst Blue Ribbon brand became one of the most recognizable beer brands in the United States, winning a blue ribbon award at an 1893 exposition that gave the beer its name. Pabst sold its last owned brewery in 1999 and has operated since as a brand-holding company that contracts the actual brewing of its beers to other breweries, while continuing to own and market dozens of American beer brands.
