The North Midland Railway was a British railway company that opened a line from Derby to Leeds in 1840, established under an 1836 Act of Parliament with George Carr Glyn as chairman and George Stephenson as chief engineer. Its 73.5-mile route was engineered to follow river valleys with gentle gradients, requiring 200 bridges, seven tunnels and an aqueduct beneath the Cromford Canal. After early financial difficulties and management turmoil, the company merged with two others in 1844 to form the Midland Railway, ending its independent existence after four years.
