Metrolink is a commuter rail system serving the greater Los Angeles and Southern California region, beginning operation in 1992 and run by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, a joint powers authority formed by the transportation commissions of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Its network of lines radiates from Los Angeles Union Station to outlying counties, carrying commuters over track shared in large part with freight railroads and Amtrak intercity service. Metrolink is one of the largest commuter rail systems in the western United States by route mileage, reflecting the sprawling, multi-county geography of the region it serves.
