The Free State Brewing Company is a microbrewery based in Lawrence, Kansas, that opened in 1989 as the first legal brewery in Kansas in more than a century. It is named for the free state movement of the Bleeding Kansas era and uses the abolitionist John Brown, as depicted in the Kansas State Capitol mural Tragic Prelude, as its mascot. In 2010 the brewery announced plans to expand distribution into Kansas, Missouri and as far east as St. Louis.
