Deutsche Bundesbahn, abbreviated DB, was the state railway of West Germany, established on September 7, 1949, as the successor to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft of the earlier German state. It served as the country's primary rail operator throughout the Cold War division of Germany, and following German reunification it merged with the former East German Deutsche Reichsbahn to form Deutsche Bahn on January 1, 1994, ending 45 years of independent operation.
