Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway

The Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway, also known as the Hampstead Tube, was a railway company established in 1891 that built a deep-level underground tube railway in London. Its construction was delayed for more than a decade while funding was sought, until in 1902 it became a subsidiary of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, controlled by the American financier Charles Yerkes, which raised the needed funds mainly from foreign investors. Several proposed routes were rejected by Parliament, but tunnels under Hampstead Heath were authorized despite opposition from local residents who feared damage to the Heath's ecology.
