British Rail

British Rail, formally British Railways, was the state-owned company responsible for rail transport in Great Britain from its creation on January 1, 1948, under the Transport Act 1947's nationalization of the country's Big Four railway companies, until dissolution following privatization under the Railways Act 1993, with the last British Rail operations ending on November 20, 1997. Headquartered on Marylebone Road in London, it ran passenger and freight services nationwide, organized in its later years into sectors such as InterCity, Network SouthEast and Regional Railways, and introduced the widely recognized double arrow logo in 1965. Richard Beeching's 1963 report led the company to close roughly a third of its passenger services and thousands of stations during the 1960s, and British Rail recorded its last operating profit in 1955.
