BMW, formally Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is a German multinational manufacturer of luxury vehicles and motorcycles headquartered in Munich, founded on March 7, 1916 and tracing its origins to aircraft engine manufacturing. The company builds automobiles under the BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce brands and motorcycles under BMW Motorrad, with production in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, India and China, and it also offers car sharing, financing, leasing and insurance services. In 2023 BMW was the world's ninth largest producer of motor vehicles and the sixth largest automaker by revenue, ranking forty sixth on the Forbes Global 2000 list that year. The Quandt family holds majority ownership through Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten, with the remainder publicly traded, and the company markets itself worldwide under the slogan The Ultimate Driving Machine.
