The Royal Bavarian Eastern Railway Company, also known as the Bavarian Ostbahn, was founded in 1856. Within two decades it built an extensive railway network across the eastern Bavarian provinces of the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria, regions previously largely undisturbed by rail, and much of that network remains important for local and long distance traffic operated today by Deutsche Bahn.
