Alexa Internet, Inc. was an American web traffic analysis company based in San Francisco, California. Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat founded it as an independent company in 1996. Alexa provided web traffic data, global rankings and other information on over 30 million websites, estimating traffic from a sample of millions of Internet users using browser extensions and from sites that had chosen to install an Alexa script. Amazon acquired it in 1999 for 250 million dollars in stock and discontinued the service on 1 May 2022.
