Pricing and Revenue-Structure Models

Advertising is the practice and set of techniques used to bring attention to a product or service, presenting it in terms of the utility, advantages and qualities that are of interest to potential consumers. Commercial advertising typically aims to increase consumption through branding, which links a product's name or image to a particular set of consumer perceptions, or through direct response advertising, which aims for an immediate sale. Advertising is also used by political parties, interest groups, religious organizations and government agencies, and non profit groups often rely on free forms of persuasion such as public service announcements. As of 2025, worldwide advertising spending was estimated at more than one trillion US dollars, with digital advertising accounting for the largest share of global spending in 2024 followed by television, and major agency groups in the industry include Omnicom, Publicis and WPP. Origin Year
1840 1
Advertising as a general practice is ancient and undated in this source (Egyptian papyrus sales notices, wall advertisements at Pompeii, Song dynasty printed posters, none carrying a specific year); 1840 marks the source's own cited founding of the modern advertising agency by Volney B. Palmer in Philadelphia, the earliest specific year the article gives for anything resembling the organized, modern form of the practice this entity describes.
Core Mechanism
Advertising works by presenting a product or service in terms of the utility, advantages and qualities that interest potential consumers, most often through branding, which associates a product name or image with certain qualities in the minds of consumers so as to increase demand and repeat purchase. 1
