American physicist, engineer and statistician sometimes called the grandfather of statistical quality control. Working at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1920s, he invented the Shewhart control chart and the Shewhart cycle, the iterative plan-do-check-act method W. Edwards Deming later modified and popularized.
