Anita Roddick was a British businesswoman and campaigner who founded The Body Shop in Brighton, England in 1976, opening a small shop selling naturally derived cosmetics in refillable containers after struggling to support her family while her husband was traveling. The company grew into an international retail chain built around ethical sourcing, opposition to animal testing and social and environmental campaigning, themes Roddick made central to the brand well before such positioning was common in retail. She remained an outspoken campaigner on human rights and environmental causes after selling The Body Shop to L'Oreal in 2006, and died in 2007.
