LEGO is a line of interlocking plastic building bricks and construction toys made by the Danish company The Lego Group, with the modern stud-and-tube brick design patented in 1958 by Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, building on earlier wooden and plastic toys the company had made since its 1932 founding by his father, Ole Kirk Christiansen. The interlocking brick system's cross-set compatibility, largely unchanged since the 1950s design, let generations of sets and licensed themes (including Star Wars and other film properties) remain physically compatible with one another, and LEGO became one of the largest and most enduringly popular toy brands in the world.
