The Whopper is the flagship hamburger of Burger King, also sold through its Australian franchise Hungry Jack's and BK Whopper Bar locations, introduced in 1957 by Burger King co-founder James McLamore in response to a larger burger a rival restaurant in Gainesville, Florida was selling. It originally cost 37 cents, equivalent to about 4.24 dollars in 2025, and consists of a flame-grilled 4 ounce beef patty on a sesame seed bun with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, and sliced onion. It became central to Burger King's advertising under the tagline the Home of the Whopper, prompted rival chains to release competing burgers in the 1970s, and has since been sold alongside a smaller Whopper Jr. version introduced in 1963 as well as plant-based and regional variants.
