Barbie

Consumer Discretionary

Barbie is a fashion doll created by Ruth Handler and launched by the toy company Mattel in March 1959, notable at the time for being modeled as an adult woman rather than the infant or child dolls that had dominated the market previously. It became one of the best-selling toy lines and most commercially significant products in the toy industry's history, generating a large ecosystem of accessories, playsets and media, and it has remained a persistent subject of cultural debate over the body image and gender-role messages associated with the doll.
