A stock exchange is an exchange where stockbrokers and traders buy and sell securities such as shares of stock, bonds, and other financial instruments, facilitating both new securities offerings and the ongoing secondary market trading of already listed ones. Exchanges raise capital for businesses, mobilize savings into investment, facilitate corporate acquisitions, and serve as a barometer for the wider economy, and most now operate through electronic communication networks rather than the physical trading floors that once defined them. As of May 2026 the largest exchanges by market capitalization were Nasdaq at 34.99 trillion dollars, the New York Stock Exchange at 30.96 trillion dollars, the Shanghai Stock Exchange at 10.18 trillion dollars, Euronext at 8.67 trillion dollars, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange at 7.64 trillion dollars. Trading volume has continued shifting away from traditional exchange floors toward electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems, and dark pools.
