The global industry that manufactures and sells cosmetics, chemical mixtures from natural or synthetic sources applied to the body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering appearance, divided broadly into decorative products such as foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, lipstick and nail polish, skincare products such as cleansers, toners, moisturizers, serums and sunscreens, and hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners and styling products, alongside perfumes and fragrances. The worldwide cosmetics and perfume sector generates roughly 170 billion dollars annually, with Europe the largest regional market at about 63 billion euros and China's market projected to reach 7.4 billion dollars by 2021. The largest cosmetics companies, including L'Oreal, Procter and Gamble, Unilever, Shiseido and Estee Lauder, dominate manufacturing, while distribution runs through department stores, drugstores, specialty beauty retailers and online platforms.
