Stock Exchange Industry

Financials

A stock exchange is an exchange where stockbrokers and traders buy and sell securities such as shares of stock, bonds, and other financial instruments, facilitating both new securities offerings and the ongoing secondary market trading of already listed ones. Exchanges raise capital for businesses, mobilize savings into investment, facilitate corporate acquisitions, and serve as a barometer for the wider economy, and most now operate through electronic communication networks rather than the physical trading floors that once defined them. As of May 2026 the largest exchanges by market capitalization were Nasdaq at 34.99 trillion dollars, the New York Stock Exchange at 30.96 trillion dollars, the Shanghai Stock Exchange at 10.18 trillion dollars, Euronext at 8.67 trillion dollars, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange at 7.64 trillion dollars. Trading volume has continued shifting away from traditional exchange floors toward electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems, and dark pools.

FAQs

What does it mean for a company to be listed on a stock exchange?

Listing puts a company's securities on an exchange once it meets that exchange's listing standards; it can be delisted if it later falls short.

Listing means a company chooses to have its securities traded on a national securities exchange, such as the Nasdaq Stock Market or the New York Stock Exchange. Before trading can begin, the company must meet that exchange's minimum financial and non-financial requirements, called listing standards, and must file an Exchange Act registration statement and become a reporting company. Listing may make it easier for existing shareholders to sell to other investors in the public market. A listed company must keep meeting the exchange's continued listing standards and its reporting requirements, and if it fails to, the exchange may remove, or delist, its securities.
