Horace Elgin Dodge Sr. (May 17, 1868 to December 10, 1920) was an American automobile manufacturing pioneer and co-founder of the Dodge Brothers Company, the firm that became the present-day Dodge. He was born in Niles, Michigan, to a father who owned a foundry and machine shop, and he moved to Detroit with his elder brother John Francis Dodge in 1886. He was a gifted mechanic and inveterate tinkerer who invented the first dirt-proof ball bearing, and in 1901 the brothers used the proceeds of a bicycle business to set up their own machine shop in Detroit. In 1896 he married Anna Thompson.
