Augustus Moore Herring

Founder and Executive

Augustus Moore Herring (August 3, 1867 to July 17, 1926) was an American aviation pioneer who is sometimes claimed by Michigan promoters to be the first true aviator of a motorized heavier-than-air aircraft. He was born in Covington, Georgia, studied in Switzerland and Germany and, as a student at the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1885 and 1886, was already building models of flying machines. By 1893 he had built a full sized glider, and in 1894 he built a monoplane glider based on Otto Lilienthal's 1893 German patent. He worked for Octave Chanute and for Samuel Pierpont Langley, and on October 10, 1898 he tried to fly a powered aeroplane of his own design at Silver Beach Amusement Park in St. Joseph, Michigan.
