Andy Bechtolsheim, born on 30 September 1955 in Bavaria, is a German electrical engineer, entrepreneur and investor. He co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and served as its chief hardware designer. As a teenager he designed an industrial controller based on the Intel 8008 for a nearby company, and royalties from it helped pay for his education. He studied electrical engineering in Munich, moved to the United States in 1975 on a Fulbright scholarship, earned a master's degree at Carnegie Mellon University in 1976 and then began a doctorate at Stanford University before leaving to work in the technology industry.
