Beginning in 2014 the Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corporation was at the center of what became the largest automotive recall in history, after its airbag inflators were found to be prone to rupturing and sending metal fragments into vehicle occupants. The defect was linked to dozens of deaths worldwide and led automakers across the industry to recall tens of millions of vehicles fitted with the affected inflators.
