The U.S. Department of Commerce added Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications equipment giant founded by Ren Zhengfei, to its export-control Entity List in May 2019, citing national security concerns and barring American companies from supplying it with technology without a special license. The sanctions, tightened further in following years, cut Huawei off from Google's Android services and advanced semiconductor supply chains, sharply curtailing its global smartphone business and escalating broader U.S.-China trade and technology tensions.
