FAQs
How did Kodak make photography available to ordinary people, and what else did its film make possible?
Kodak sold a simple consumer camera in 1888, and its 1889 transparent roll film enabled the first motion picture camera.
In 1888 George Eastman put the first simple camera into the hands of consumers under the slogan "you press the button, we do the rest," aiming to make photography as convenient as the pencil. In 1889 he marketed the first commercial transparent roll film, which Kodak says enabled Thomas Edison to develop the first motion picture camera. Kodak has since earned nine Oscar statuettes for its technical contributions to the movie industry, more than any other non-studio company.
