Southern Pacific Transportation Company

The Southern Pacific Transportation Company was the last corporate incarnation of the Southern Pacific railroad system, founded in 1969 to assume control of the network after it had previously operated under the names Southern Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Company since the system began in 1865 as a land holding company. The Southern Pacific Transportation Company was acquired in 1996 by the Union Pacific Corporation and merged into the Union Pacific Railroad. Earlier in its history the wider Southern Pacific enterprise had also founded hospitals in San Francisco, Tucson and Houston and, in the 1970s, a telecommunications network whose backbone later became part of Sprint.
