The Providence and Worcester Railroad is a Class II railroad, established in 1844 to connect Providence, Rhode Island with Worcester, Massachusetts, with service beginning in 1847 and operating today over 612 miles of track across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York including trackage rights. After operating independently for more than four decades, the company was leased to larger railroads for 85 years before regaining its independence in 1973, subsequently purchasing lines from the Boston and Maine Railroad and Conrail and absorbing several shortline railroads in the region. It has been owned by Genesee and Wyoming since November 2016.
