Plymouth and Vineyard Sound Railroad

The Plymouth and Vineyard Sound Railroad was a rail company in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, originally incorporated in 1861 as the Vineyard Sound Railroad Company to connect Sandwich and Woods Hole on Cape Cod; it took its later name in 1868 with an unrealized plan to extend north to Plymouth, and completed a 17.5-mile line between Buzzards Bay and Woods Hole in 1872, later running the Dude Train for wealthy Boston businessmen. The company was sold to the Cape Cod Railroad Company in 1871, merged into the Old Colony Railroad Company in 1872, and became part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1893; its right-of-way is now the Shining Sea Bikeway.
